  • Three Tips for Mixing Stripes Like a Stylist

Stripes are everything. I turn to nautical-inspired stripes for weekend errands, pinstripes for big work meetings and bold colorblocking when I want to make a statement—there’s a stripe for every situation. But this summer, I’ve been craving a new way to style this classic and have started experimenting with pattern mixing.

Mixing different kinds of stripes instantly makes the pattern feel fresh—giving it a modern edge and whole new level of fun—without taking me too far outside my comfort zone or requiring me to buy all new pieces (#savingforawedding). But it can be tricky to figure out how to pull it off without looking awkward or mismatched.

I stopped by the Evereve photo studio last week to try on a few looks I’m loving right now and picked up some tips from our Director of Styling that I had to share! Here’s what I learned about how to mix stripes like a pro and effortlessly give my wardrobe a fun update.

Tip 1: Mix Different Scales

Mixing stripes of different scales ensures your look isn’t too match-y or monotone. Here, the skinny stripes in my woven tee are balanced by the wider single stripe running the length of my track pants. Both pieces are pretty simple on their own, but together they’re fresh and fun—the kind of outfit that makes me look forward to getting dressed for a Monday of meetings! I love the slimming effect of the racing stripe, and the top has a cool crisscross detail in back that makes it a fun option for when I’m off the clock, too.

Tip 2: Pick a Color Family

Staying within a single color family ensures you won’t have too many different layers going on in your look. Mixing stripes means your outfit is already busy—in a good way—but introducing another layer, like a new color, quickly crosses the line from cool to crazy. I stuck with black and white, but it would be easy to blend different shades of blue, like navy and cobalt, too! And if you’re in the market for a versatile and comfy dress (who isn’t?), you need this midi! It’s elevated enough for grad parties, casual enough for weekend grill-outs and I’m penciling it in for a couples’ shower I’m attending in a couple weeks.

Tip 3: Keep Your Shoes and Accessories Simple

Because stripes on both your top and bottom makes a bold statement, keep the rest of your look simple to create balance. Go for subtle studs over statement earrings, a petite bag with clean lines over an oversized slouchy tote and shoes that pick up some of the color you’re wearing without adding too many new textures or embellishments. I love this pairing for a night out with friends or dinner with my fiancé—it’s playful and unexpected without looking like I tried super hard (always the goal, right?). The cut of the halter is flattering on every body type and the stretchy pull-on skirt is my new favorite thing—definitely no going home early when you’re wearing this!
